Which show, or was a longer process, did "Playing in the band" go from a run of the mill Bobby tune, turn into its own, psychedelic tinged, jazzy advent-guard, jammed out and exploratory, then make goo of your brain, version of its own self? I think of Venetta '72 as a great example. Link would be great. Thanks.

here's one where they actually started putting a little jamming into it rather than the straight ahead " song"

I'll have to check earlier. I think it really turned the corner in November. I think the biottom line is it coincided with the addition of Keith

I definitely was gradual . I think your Keith, idea is right on the money . In later 71 , it seems the realization that they could take it out for a longer drive took hold ; so by Europe we see it really starts to go places .
I think someone would have to go through the 71 versions with a stopwatch ...

I think it is Jon Mcyntire, who was in and out of the band's orbit throughout the years. He held a number of positions over the years including tour manager at one point.

I think it kind of happened a little before Veneta. Check out this one:

It was a long process, but there were a few turning points. The song gradually grew in length over the Europe 72 tour from little over 10 minutes to around 18 minutes, give or take, and throughout 72 pretty much stayed within the 18-21 minute range (I think). Veneta and the many fantastic September playin's are usually around this length.

In my mind, the first REALLY out-there exploratory playin' occurred on 7/1/73: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-07-01.fob.kaslow-todd.motb-0055.88608.flac24

This I think is the longest to date, and it has a lot more going on, more twists and turns, than did any I have heard that came before. It's less biting and intense than the late 72 ones but I think it's better, and jazzier.

I don't consider the fall '71 Playings as really 'breaking out' - there's a bit more of an instrumental in the middle, but it's cut short all too soon...it doesn't really develop that much or become a real jam, more like a short syncopated solo.
The turning-point comes when they recorded it for the Ace album (in Jan '72, I believe) - if you hear this, you can tell it's way beyond what they were doing with the song in '71.
Then the Academy of Music shows in March '72 see another big jump, when it becomes a 10-minute piece with a fireball jam. It stayed like that through most of the Europe tour, but by the last Lyceum shows they started stretching it out more, longer each night!
Summer '72 has these mid-range Playings - I think Veneta may have been the point when they started consistently topping 18 minutes.
10/18/72 has the first 'split' Playing where the reprise comes after a couple other songs. 10/26/72 has the biggest Playing of the year (26 minutes), and 11/15 and 11/18 also see 25-minute monsters. (These versions are also unusual since they come in set II instead of closing set I.)
By '73 the Playing jams were perhaps more into watery hypnotism than crackling intensity... I agree 7/1/73 is a standout Playing - it's also a set-II version, which was rare at that point, but became more common that fall.
I think '73 is also when they started extending that last instrumental riff (after the reprise verse) until it became a little jam in its own right - in '72 it always feels like they're wrapping it up too soon, but later on they let you ride out the wave.

And of course, '72 also had the introduction of Donna into Playing! Doing her best to pull you back from the goo...
I should point out that while on SBDs, Donna's wails into the reprise stick out like a thumb under a hammer, she comes across differently on AUDs - when the band storms back into the reprise, the audience is usually clapping & hollering in excitement, and she fits right in.

Still not a big Donna fan, but I do agree with you that her “Playin’” banshee screams, while still somewhat jarring, do come across as slightly more appropriate on audience tapes. Sometimes the auds capture certain intangibles of the event as a whole that aren’t present on the boards (and sometimes they’re just muddy tapes of stoned people talking while some band, presumably the GD, rumbles on in the background).

6/22 has always been my favorite from 73, for some reason. Too many great versions in that year to really even compare them all.

My favorite 74 might be 6/16, but again, there are way too many good ones that year.
